Jury Acquits Zendeh Del & Associates’ Client, Clear Lake Yoga Therapist, in High-Profile Murder Trial: A Victory for Self-Defense in Texas

A Galveston County jury has delivered justice in a case that captured widespread attention across the Clear Lake community. Donna Parker, a 41-year-old yoga therapist, was found not guilty of murder in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend aboard a sailboat in May 2022—a verdict that underscores the strength and importance of Texas’ self-defense laws.

Parker was represented by the legal team at Zendeh Del & Associates, PLLC, who maintained from the outset that she acted in self-defense when she shot 45-year-old Luther Figgs during a violent confrontation aboard the couple’s 32-foot sailboat, the Bad Fish, docked at the Watergate Yachting Center.

“This verdict is more than just a win in court,” said attorney Jonathan Zendeh Del, who defended Parker. “It’s a reminder that self-defense is alive and well in Texas. When someone fears for their life or is threatened with serious bodily harm, Texas law empowers them to protect themselves.”

The tragic incident occurred on May 18, 2022. Parker told investigators that Figgs, who had a documented history of aggressive behavior and mental health issues, trapped her on the boat and attempted to attack her. Fearing for her life, she used a firearm to defend herself, firing three shots that resulted in Figgs’ death.

When police arrived, they found Figgs deceased on the couch inside the vessel, sitting with his legs crossed. This detail became a focal point in the prosecution’s argument, who claimed the scene suggested Parker was not in immediate danger.

But Parker never wavered in her account: she shot Figgs as he advanced toward her in a violent rage—a dynamic that had repeated itself during their relationship. Her defense team, led by attorneys Jonathan Zendeh Del and Natalie Holt, painted a detailed picture of a cycle of abuse, emphasizing Parker’s growing fear and the escalating threats she faced.

Defense Strategy and Jury Decision

The defense didn’t just present a self-defense narrative—they challenged the very foundation of the prosecution’s case. Attorney Natalie Holt highlighted inconsistencies in the investigation and mishandling of evidence by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. She also described Figgs as “demonic” in his rages, likening his demeanor to “a bear on the attack.”

It took the jury less than two hours to reach their verdict. After more than two years of legal battles, public speculation, and intense emotional toll, Parker was acquitted of all charges.

“It’s a travesty to the legal system that someone who defended herself had to be arrested and prosecuted in the first place,” said Zendeh Del. “But today’s verdict sends a strong message to survivors of abuse and to would-be abusers: Texas does not punish those who protect themselves.
