For more than 30 years, Judge Pedro Ruiz has faithfully served the public both as an attorney and as a judge. After graduating from high school summa cum laude in 1982, he earned his undergraduate degree at Houston Baptist University in 1986, where he was also an active participant and member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He decided to attend law school after his graduation from Houston Baptist, ultimately earning his Juris Doctorate from The University of Houston Law Center in 1989.

Once he received his J.D., Judge Ruiz focused his legal practice on criminal defense law, working at various law firms throughout Fort Bend, Galveston, and Harris County. A skilled trial attorney and an aggressive advocate for his clients, Judge Ruiz served as a trial lawyer in over 150 different criminal cases. Later, he was appointed to be the Assistant District Attorney for Fort Bend County, where he took a role as lead counsel for over 5,000 juvenile, misdemeanor, and felony cases. In this capacity, Judge Ruiz gained valuable insight and experience into the “other side” of the criminal justice system.

Judge Ruiz earned his first judicial appointment in 2003, serving the public as a judge in the 240th, 268th, 400th, and 434th Judicial District Courts of Texas. In that role, he also concluded 5,000 civil trials and sentenced thousands of felony offenders. From there Judge Ruiz became a Magistrate Judge and a Judge of the Tax Court for nearly 10 years. Most recently, he was appointed as a Presiding Judge for County Court at Law Number 5 in Fort Bend County.

A dedicated public servant with extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system, Judge Pedro Ruiz is an invaluable asset to our criminal defense team here at Zendeh Del & Associates, PLLC. As Of Counsel, he assists our firm by providing insight and strategic guidance on criminal case strategies. Now retired from the judge’s seat, Judge Ruiz has chosen to concentrate his practice in Juvenile and Criminal Law.

Judge Ruiz is thrilled to be living in Galveston now, and he is deeply committed to serving his local community. His wife Julie Santos Ruiz is a University of Houston graduate and a teacher, and together they have two children: Francisco and Pedro Jr. Both are currently enrolled as freshmen at Texas A&M University.

Judge Ruiz joined Zendeh Del & Associates, PLLC in 2019.
